When Badger Activity Becomes a Serious Problem
Badgers are powerful diggers and can cause significant disruption when they begin regularly entering gardens or establishing setts close to homes and other structures.
Lawns can be disturbed while badgers search for food, while more extensive excavation can affect landscaping, paths, driveways and surrounding ground.
The situation is made more complicated because badgers and their setts are protected by law. Blocking an entrance, damaging a sett or attempting to move the animals without the appropriate authority could constitute an offence.
That makes professional assessment particularly important. The problems can include:
-
1
Damaged Lawns
-
2
Excavation & Ground Disturbance
-
3
Paths & Driveways
-
4
Ongoing Property Damage
-
5
Strict Legal Protection

The Valkor Badger Management Process
Site & Ecology Assessment
The first step is understanding exactly what is happening on your property.
Valkor works alongside specialist ecology professionals to assess badger activity and establish the most appropriate course of action.
The assessment may consider:
- Sett locations and entrances
- Signs and levels of activity
- Regular access routes
- Damage to lawns and landscaping
- Proximity to buildings, paths and driveways
- Whether licensing or additional ecological advice may be required
This allows us to develop a solution based on the individual property rather than simply attempting to discourage the animals without understanding the wider problem.
A Legally Compliant Plan
Once the activity has been assessed, we develop a management and protection plan for the property.
Depending on the circumstances, this could involve:
- Specialist badger fencing
- Underground barriers
- Protection of vulnerable areas
- Management of established access routes
- Licensed exclusion measures where appropriate
- Coordination with ecology specialists
Certain forms of sett interference or exclusion require appropriate authorisation. Natural England guidance allows licensed methods, including one way gates, in qualifying circumstances.
Every recommendation is designed around protecting the property while respecting the legal protection afforded to badgers.
Long Term Property Protection
The objective is not simply to address what is happening today.
It is to reduce the likelihood of the same damage continuing.
Working alongside the relevant ecology specialists where required, Valkor can coordinate the management process and install robust physical protection measures around vulnerable areas.
Solutions may include:
- Heavy duty badger fencing
- Below ground barriers
- Reinforcement of vulnerable boundaries
- Protection around gardens and landscaped areas
- Longer term access management
Where licensed intervention is required, the appropriate ecological and regulatory process can be incorporated into the management plan.
Questions & answers
Looking for answers? Explore our help section or contact us if you need more support.
Are badgers protected by law?
Yes. Badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. It can be an offence to kill, injure or capture a badger, or to damage, destroy, obstruct or disturb a badger sett.
Can I block a badger hole in my garden?
You should not block an entrance if it forms part of an active badger sett without first establishing what legal restrictions apply. Blocking access to a sett can be an offence. Professional assessment should be carried out before any action is taken.
Can badgers legally be excluded from a property?
In some circumstances, yes. Some preventative measures can be used without a licence provided they do not interfere with a sett. Where sett interference or exclusion is necessary, a Natural England licence may be required. Licensed exclusion can include methods such as one way gates.
What can Valkor do about badger damage?
Valkor can assess the problem, work alongside specialist ecology professionals, develop an appropriate management plan and install robust protection measures designed to reduce further damage while remaining within the relevant legal requirements.
